School of Medicine Building

Home to first and second year medical students 95% of the time, the School of Medicine Building (SOMB) is where all of our classes, labs, and clinical learning happen. There are so many perks that come with attending class here!

  • State of the art technology makes lectures, clinical skills sessions, and laboratory content fun and interactive.
  • The basement, second and third floor have a number of study rooms for small group and individual learning. The room-booking system allows medical students to reserve study rooms as-needed.
  • Each floor of the building has large windows to let in lots of natural light and many of the study rooms look out over the prettiest parts of Queen’s campus.
  • Our anatomy laboratory (one of the best in the country!) is located on the second floor. A comprehensive anatomy museum parallels and supports the cadaver lab throughout the first-year curriculum.
  • Our clinical simulation labs and clinical skills centre are run like a well-oiled machine by the clinical skills staff. Here you will meet standardized patients and practice all components of the physical exam. Each room is well-stocked with any clinical tools and equipment you might need to provide quality care in a standard primary care setting.
  • PEACH market  is located in the atrium of SOMB. This organization helps to address the issues of food waste and food insecurity among student populations by providing affordable lunch options from campus food hospitality services. They use a “pay-what-you-can” model to reduce lunch costs for any Queen’s student.
  • The basement and first floor have large lecture halls where you will attend classes. Desks are equipped with microphones so you can hear any question asked, and large lecture screens ensure visibility is never an issue. The majority of our classes are recorded for future reference.
  • The medical student kitchenette on the first floor is exclusively accessible to medical students. Multiple kettles, coffee machines, microwaves, and a large fridge allow us to store our lunches and meet our caffeine needs throughout the day.
  • Lockers are located throughout the building and can be accessed by any student throughout the day to store their belongings (with that in mind- make sure you pack a lock!)

We love our building, and our 24/7 access means that we spend a LOT of time here taking advantage of the best study spot on campus. We are confident that you’ll love the SOMB just as much as we do and we can’t wait for you to see it!
