Who's Who in the NICU

There are many members of our NICU health care team, and each one has a special role to play in caring for your baby. You will have been introduced to some of them in our introduction video. Some of the important members of our team include:

  • Nurses
  • Respiratory Therapists
  • Social Workers
  • Dieticians
  • Neonatologists (doctors for sick newborns)
  • Residents and Fellows
  • Charge Nurses
  • Neonatal Nurse Practitioners
  • Pharmacists
  • Unit Clerks

Team rounds happen every morning in our NICU. They involve the entire NICU care team, especially nurses, physicians, respiratory therapists, dieticians, and parents. During rounds, updates are given on how each baby is doing, including any events that happened during the previous day or overnight. A care plan is made for the hours and days ahead, including any tests that may need to be ordered, or changes that may need to be made to their ventilation or feeding. Attending rounds, when you are able, can be a very positive way to become involved and familiar with your baby’s care.
