Common Medications

The following are some medications which are commonly given to newborn infants, if they require it:

  • Vitamins
    • Vitamin K is given at birth to all newborns to help prevent hemorrhagic disease of the newborn.
  • Caffeine
    • This is given to help prevent infants from having stops/pausing in their breaths (apnea of prematurity) and may also protect their brain.
  • Probiotics (Florababy)
    • Given once daily through the nasal (NG) feeding tube.
    • They favour the growth of friendly bacteria which might reduce risk of gut infections such as NEC.
