It is important for all health care professionals who care for children to have an understanding of normal gross motor development. This is often expressed as a series of "milestones" achieved by normal individuals.There is frequently a wide range in these milestones and so it is important not to raise undue concern over minor variations. Most children walk independently by 18 months. Significant motor delay or a pattern of loss of motor milestones warrants detailed evaluation.
