Despite our busy class schedules, Queen's students still find ample opportunity to give back to the community through pre-existing and original initiatives. Here is just a sampling of some of the projects that QMed students are involved with:
QMed Healthcare Mentorship
QMed HCM fosters one-on-one relationships between Queen’s undergraduate and medical students, matched based on shared academic and personal interests. The program provides undergraduates with guidance and encouragement tailored to their individual goals while offering QMed students a meaningful opportunity to mentor future generations of medical trainees.
Jr. Medics
Jr Medics is a Service Learning Program (SLP) led by medical students at Queen’s University. Members of this group volunteer as instructors, travelling in teams to elementary schools in the greater Kingston area to teach sessions about the basics of first aid. Our goal is to introduce youth to first aid knowledge and skills so they can feel more confident helping others, understand the importance of personal safety and injury prevention, and develop an interest in learning more about first aid. We have also recently expanded our program options to include sessions for senior students about CPR, and we hope to add more programs in the near future!
QMeals on Wheels
Qmeals on Wheels is a new initiative that started in October of 2017. In this program, students volunteer to drive donated food to individuals who cannot make it out to collect their own food from the resource.
SexMED
SexMED is a sex-positive, 2SLGBT2Q+-positive, feminist organization run by medical students with the intention to teach evidence-based and scientifically accurate sexual health education to students in elementary and high school in Kingston (and beyond!). Using curriculum developed by Dr. Jennifer McCall (OB/GYN) during medical school at Queen’s, SexMED is run by QMED student volunteers to deliver unbiased programming in a positive and welcoming manner.
Concussion Education, Safety, and Awareness Program (CESAP)
CESAP is primarily run by medical students at Queen’s University and is designated as a Service Learning Program (SLP). We strive to increase awareness about head injuries by delivering concussion-based education to elementary and high school students in and around Kingston. During these sessions, our volunteer instructor teams cover topics such as concussion injury mechanisms, recognizing signs and symptoms, the concussion recovery process, and more!
Swimmers With A Mission (SWAM)
S.W.A.M. Kingston is a not-for-profit student initiative founded as a registered chapter of S.W.A.M. Canada in 2011. Our mission is to provide affordable and accessible one-on-one recreational swimming lessons to children with disabilities. For more information about our parent organization, as well as about the history of the S.W.A.M. movement, please visit
QMed Fights Cancer
QMed Fights Cancer is a student-led initiative by Queen’s medical students dedicated to raising money for cancer research. Our annual charity hockey game features medical students against resident and staff physicians, one of the biggest events of the year! To date, we have raised over $205,000.
