Global Health Mentorship Project

Released Wednesday, October 1, 2008 by Jessica Liauw
Hi Everyone!

I hope you are doing well and enjoying your medical studies. I am writing to you on behalf of the Global Health Mentorship Project (GHMP), a unique opportunity for medical students (like you!) to enhance your global health education.

The Global Health Mentorship Project (GHMP) is a not-for-profit project that links Canadian medical students and development professionals in mentor-mentee relationships. The project requires about 2 to 10 hours per month from a student, where she or he would communicate with a mentor over email, the phone or in person.

Through direct contact with a professional in the development sector, we can gain valuable practical knowledge that we can use as medical students and future physicians. In the past, mentorship has improved students' knowledge and understanding of specific global health issues, global health resources and opportunities, and the ethics of global health work. This education is facilitated by discussions with the mentor, as well as an experiential component of the mentorship in which mentees volunteer their time to something that may add value to the mentor's organization, such as a literature review, survey, or research.

Students are selected to participate in the GHMP from a pool of applicants across Canada. Although previous experience in global health is not required, students must demonstrate dedication and interest in learning about issues within their identified area of interest. Students in all years of medicine are encouraged to participate in the project.

If you are interested in applying for a mentor, please fill out the attached form (see documents tab) and return it to mentorship@cfms.org by 5 PM EST on Tuesday October 14th, 2008. If you have any further questions, please feel free to email me at npuri2011@meds.uwo.ca, or visit our website at ghmp.cfms.org.   Thank you so much, and good luck with your application!
