Thoracentesis is a procedure in which the chest wall is punctured for aspiration of pleural fluid. It is used to determine the etiology of pleural fluid (diagnostic thoracentesis), to relieve dyspnea caused by pleural fluid (therapeutic thoracentesis), and, occasionally, to perform pleurodesis.
