Check the medial clear space. On the mortise view, check the space between the articular surfaces of the talus and the medial malleolus. This space should be approximately equal to the space between the articular surfaces of the tibia and the talus (superior clear space). If the width of the space is greater than 4mm, it suggests lateral shift of the talus.
