Sensory Exam
Peripheral Neuropathies
- You don’t need to know all of these nerves but you should know common ones such as radial, median and ulnar nerves in the arms and femoral and common peroneal nerves in the legs.
- A polyneuropathy is a length dependent neuropathy that affects the longest nerves first. Therefore sensory changes start in the toes and move up the leg as the neuropathy worsens. When changes are seen up to the level of the knees, you might then start seeing changes in the fingers as well. This is called a stocking-glove pattern.
