Family-centred care
- The ICF-CY implicitly recognizes the influence of the family-context in which the child lives on outcomes of health, activities and participation. In the same way, family-centred care (FCC) recognizes the importance of a supportive family and community on child health and participation outcomes. In this way, FCC places the family at the centre of the child's life.
- FCC:
- recognizes the family as the child's primary source of strength and support, and the parent(s) as the experts in understanding their child's abilities and goals.
- promotes and welcomes the active participation of the parents and of the child in decision-making, and the participation of all members of the family celebrated.
- recognizes that the family itself functions within a community that is guided by a set of cultural beliefs, laws, policies, and institutions that indirectly influence a child's development.
- The anticipated result of FCC is that the family will develop autonomy and work toward gaining control over the management of their situation.
- What can families expect from FCC?
- You can find more information on FCC to use in your digital case stories in: "10 things you can do to be family-centred".
- The ultimate goal is to help the child build life-long relationships within the family and the community.
