A Self-Directed Learning Module
Implanted central venous access ports have become the mainstay of
treatment for long-term cancer therapy. They are designed for safe,
easy, and repeated access. One type of implanted venous access device
is the Port-A-Cath. Port-A-Caths are tunneled right atrium catheters
that feature a subcutaneous portal with a self-sealing septum that may
be accessed by needle puncture through intact skin. Some of the
advantages of Port-A-Caths are that they require little manipulation,
have few complications, and promote a more positive body image and
maintenance of routine lifestyle activities.
