PT 861 - Introduction to paediatric physiotherapy and typical development
Gross motor milestones of the first year
- Over the first year, the infant will typically:
- develop sufficient strength and control to break free from asymmetrical positions
- gain control over midline behaviours, bringing arms and legs together
- gain ability for weight-shifting and combine with reciprocal movements of the arms and legs for grounded locomotion
- gain posture control in different antigravity positions and acquire the ability to transition between these different postural sets
- gain posture control and strength for vertical locomotion
- These developmental milestones are detailed in this summary of infant gross motor development, a document that will be useful to you throughout this course.
