Gross motor milestones of the first year

  • Over the first year, the infant will typically:
    • develop sufficient strength and control to break free from asymmetrical positions
    • gain control over midline behaviours, bringing arms and legs together
    • gain ability for weight-shifting and combine with reciprocal movements of the arms and legs for grounded locomotion
    • gain posture control in different antigravity positions and acquire the ability to transition between these different postural sets
    • gain posture control and strength for vertical locomotion
