Blood Transfusions
Clinical case #5
Presentation
After his chemotherapy, Mr. J.R., a leukemia patient, is given a platelet transfusion in an attempt to treat his thrombocytopenia. During the transfusion, he develops mild urticaria. The transfusion is stopped, but four hours later, he develops an isolated fever of 38.5 C. Lab results show a negative DAT and no evidence of hemolysis.
Questions to consider:
- How would you explain these symptoms?
- What is the appropriate treatment?
