Volunteering

Despite our busy class schedules, Queen's students still find ample opportunity to give back to the community through pre-existing and original initiatives. Here is just a sampling of some of the projects that QMed students are involved with:

Altitude Mentorship
Altitude: Healthcare Mentoring is a program aimed at empowering students to pursue and reach their goals. Students selected for the program come from backgrounds and regions that are traditionally underrepresented in Canada’s healthcare workforce. Medical students volunteer with Altitude as mentors, program coordinators on-site and nationally to move the program forward.

Jr. Medics

Jr Medics is a student initiative aimed to promote service learning in the QMed curriculum. Volunteers from the class of Queen's medical students attend grade schools throughout Kingston to teach basic first aid. The goal is to make younger students aware of the fact that they can be in control of their safety and promote initiative to learn how.

Qmeals on Wheels

Qmeals on Wheels is a new initiative that started in October of 2017. In this program, students volunteer to drive donated food to individuals who cannot make it out to collect their own food from the ressource.

Swimability
Making Waves Kingston is a student initiative founded as a registered chapter of Making Waves Canada in 2009. Volunteers, of which many are Queen's medical students, provide affordable and accessible one-on-one swimming instruction to children with special needs. The goal is to be more effective in injury prevention by providing lessons specifically targeted and adapted to those children at highest risk of drowning in our society.

Responsible Sexuality
The Responsible Sexuality program connects first year medical students with Grade 9 students in Kingston and the surrounding area. Medical students have the opportunity to lead two classes on sexual education, including discussions on methods of contraception, sexual anatomy, and healthy sexual behaviours. The classes are interactive and provide an open and safe forum for learning and discussion. Medical students also have the opportunity to learn about community resources available for sexual health issues. Teaching is not only a fun experience, but a great way to become more comfortable discussing aspects of sexual health.

Martha's Table
Martha's Table is a non profit charitable organization that provides low cost nutritious meals to those in need in an environment that encourages mutual respect, acceptance and understanding. Our meals are served Monday through Friday by volunteers in a restaurant-style setting for the nominal cost of one dollar. Our drop-in center or “Friendship Room” is a relaxing and comfortable space where people come for rest, companionship and shelter. Coffee, snacks and sandwiches are available free of charge.
